Your questions

The first 45 minutes are a slideshow-led walk through how custodial accounts work. The last 15 minutes are for your questions about the material. It’s private: one family per booking, on Google Meet.

What we cover

  • Custodial account basics: what UTMA and UGMA accounts and custodial Roth IRAs are, in general terms, and how they differ.
  • Opening an account: how the process usually works and what to have ready.
  • Contributions and taxes: the general rules and basics to know.
  • Comparing brokerages and funds: custodial account features on established platforms, including providers we’ve personally used or researched, and how to compare low-cost funds, so you can judge which options meet your family’s needs.
  • Common mistakes: where families often go wrong when they start, and how to avoid it.

Who it’s for

Parents and guardians who are starting to learn about investing for a child and want the basics explained in one sitting, in plain language.

One parent or guardian books and pays. A second parent or guardian from the same family is welcome at no extra charge, as long as you both watch from the same device and the same Google Meet connection.

What’s included

  • The 60-minute session: 45 minutes of presentation and 15 minutes of Q&A.
  • The Custodial Account Starter Action Plan, emailed to the booking address within 24 hours after your session.
  • One follow-up email about 7 days after your session, with a recap and the resources we covered.

The action plan

A practical companion to the session: checklists to help you prepare and compare options, a worksheet you fill in privately, resources to keep learning, and clear next steps you can take on your own. Every family receives the same document, with your name and session date on it. It includes:

  • A custodial account preparation checklist
  • A brokerage comparison checklist
  • A recap of the general investing concepts from the session
  • A blank contribution planning worksheet, for you to fill in privately
  • A checklist for putting things in place on your own
  • Educational resources and references

Educational scope and important information

This is an educational session. We explain how things work so you can make your own decisions.

  • No personalized investment, tax or legal advice.
  • No individualized stock recommendations, portfolio allocations, or instructions to buy or sell investments.
  • The action plan is a standard educational document, not a personalized financial plan.
  • We don’t open brokerage accounts on your behalf or handle sensitive financial information.
  • Ongoing one-on-one support is not included in the consultation price. Additional educational support options may be offered separately in the future.

Please don’t share sensitive details. You won’t need account statements, account numbers, balances, income, Social Security numbers or your children’s personal details, at booking or in the session. For decisions about your own situation, talk to a licensed professional. See our disclaimer.
