Our April 2025 stock and ETF watchlist with entry points, sector analysis, and market outlook.

Market Overview

Welcome back to The Wealth Catchers' watchlist. The month of March was a deep red for the majority of investors. We saw all the indices drop a great deal, with the S&P 500 (-4.07%) and the NASDAQ (-5.73%) suffering the most. The headlines circling around tariffs are at the forefront of causing this massive selloff. All eyes are currently on April 2nd, which is slated for tariffs to go into effect. This is causing extreme fear and uncertainty in the market and having consumers show weakening confidence.

Crypto & Digital Assets

The S&P 500 has had the worst Q1 since 2022. Since 1928, the S&P 500 has, on average, risen 1.5% in the first quarter. That obviously wasn't the case, as we ended the quarter down -4.6%. There is some optimism for the second quarter; it's usually up 2.3% on average. This negative quarter was heavily influenced by the performance of the Magnificent Seven. This group is down 16%, which leads us to needing to really evaluate where the market is concentrated. Year-to-date the equal-weighted ETF, RSP, is down -1.14% when compared to the SPY, which is down -4.55%. We have been aware of this concentration in the market, but this definitely highlights that there is too much weighting towards these names. Concentration, which we had, gets you the outsized gains, but great diversification, which we are lacking, lets you keep them. Another section to highlight during this downturn is the performance of the VIX. This is the volatility index that many use as a fear gauge as well. I like to look at this indicator as a look into the level of uncertainty in the market. 30+ is usually the magic number that gets investors extremely worried. So far we have not hit that number in this quarter, so that is viewed as a positive, for now. The last 10 corrections for the S&P 500 had an average VIX level of 37. This is the other side of the coin that shows that there could be room for more selling off.

Closing Note

I appreciate you all checking in this month. Stay invested; stay positive. Also, here's your friendly reminder:

Key Takeaways

  • "Liberation Day" tariffs (April 2) are the primary market driver — extreme uncertainty ahead.
  • Average VIX during S&P corrections is 37. At 22, there is room for more volatility.
  • Magnificent Seven down 16% YTD — but the equal-weighted index shows the broader market is healthier.
  • Utilities (+2.74%) were the only positive sector in March. Rotate defensively until clarity improves.
  • "The time to buy is when there's blood in the streets" — April tariff volatility = accumulation opportunity.
